[FL] How do I assign power of attorney to my stepsister?

My aging father lives in another state. As his only heir, I need to relinquish any and all rights to make decisions about his care to my stepsister, who lives near him. How do I do that officially?

Currently you do not have any decision-making authority to assign to your stepsister since you are not the Power of Attorney.

I understand this must be a difficult situation for you. Have you and your stepsister discussed this decision with your father?

No.

Are you looking to transfer decision-making rights temporarily or permanently to your stepsister?

Permanently.

Is there anything else the lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured they’ll be able to help with transferring decision-making rights permanently.

My father refuses to discuss POA options with my stepsister.

Hey there! Welcome to AskaLawyer. I'm Jessica B, an attorney with many years of experience, and I'm here to help you. I am so sorry your father's health is declining. Is he still legally competent?

As far as I know, he is competent. However, he is showing signs of decline by refusing medical attention, not caring for himself, and showing a lack of hygiene.

Unfortunately he must sign a Power of Attorney in order to officially appoint your step sister. If he refuses then she will need to have him declared incompetent through a court order and then she can be appointed his legal guardian.

Am I able to preemptively sign over decision-making rights to her in the even that he is somehow incapacitated or incompetent?
