[SD] Do I need a business license to sell shirts for my YouTube podcast?
In general, you don’t need to collect sales tax if your taxable sales in North Dakota are less than $100,000 in the current or previous calendar year.
Once you exceed this threshold, you must:
- Obtain a permit, and
- Begin collecting tax on sales delivered during the following calendar year or within 60 days of crossing the threshold — whichever comes first.
North Dakota does not require a general statewide business license, so based on what you’ve described:
- As long as you're under the financial threshold,
- And operating as a hobby or informal venture,
You do not need a license or a sales/use tax permit at this time.

Hello — I live in Sioux Falls.
I have a YouTube podcast and I've had shirts designed for the podcast.
I sell them on a friend’s website where he does print-on-demand for several bands and podcasters.
I put a link to his site with my shirts on it, and if I sell one through his site, I make a commission off that.
Is this something I need a business license for or any other types of permits?

That sounds like an exciting venture! Have you already started selling your podcast shirts through your friend’s website?
Yes.

Are you currently operating your YouTube podcast and shirt sales as a business entity, or is it more of a hobby at this point?
Hobby.
