[UT] [UT] Can you help me get a refund?

Can I get a refund if I paid for something and was told I had to sign a very one-sided contract before I could get what I paid for? The contract says no refunds, but I have proof I was instructed to sign it after I paid.

Thanks—that’s enough to advise. Here’s the gist:

  • A contract is generally enforceable only if both sides agree before the transaction—“meeting of the minds.” If you paid first and only then saw “no refunds” and other terms, you didn’t agree to those at purchase.
  • Terms like unilateral “no refunds,” broad image rights, and “we can remove you for any reason,” sprung on you post-payment, can be challenged as unconscionable.
  • Utah consumer protection law prohibits deceptive practices, including hiding or delaying key terms until after payment (Utah Consumer Sales Practices Act, Title 13, Chapter 11).

What to do next:

  1. Document everything. Save screenshots, timestamps showing payment came before the contract, and all attempts to contact them.
  2. Send a formal message (email/letter). Be polite but firm:
    1. You were shown material terms only after paying, so you did not assent to them.
    2. Request a full refund (or, if you prefer, continued access under fair terms).
  3. If no response or refusal:
    1. File a complaint with the Utah Division of Consumer Protection.
    2. Consider small claims court for the refund; bring your documentation.

I understand how frustrating that is. What was the item or service?

An online creator course.

AI

Have you tried contacting the company about a refund?

I’m trying, but I can’t get ahold of anyone. I’m also afraid they’ll kick me out of the program and keep my money.

AI

Anything else the lawyer should know?

Yes.

Jon

Could you share the specific terms that concern you?

There was no mention of a contract until after I paid (I have the timestamp). I couldn’t reach anyone to negotiate, and I worried they wouldn’t let me in otherwise. The contract says: no refunds, they can use my image for anything, and they can kick me out at any moment for any reason.

Jon

Where are you located, and have you tried email or social media to reach them?

Salt Lake City, Utah. I’m trying to get an email to take this off the app, but no luck so far.

Also, should I mention I’ve sought legal counsel? And what if they cancel my account for asking?

Jon

Don’t mention legal counsel yet—it can put them on the defensive. Stick to facts and your timeline.
If they cancel your account after a good-faith refund inquiry, that’s strong evidence of bad faith. Keep records; it helps with a consumer complaint or small claims case.

Thanks.
