[FL] Can I bear firearms in my home as a convicted felon?

I want to know is it possible to bear arms in my home to protect my family. I’m 66 1/2 years old. I have 2 felonies dating back 25 and 30 years.

Unfortunately, there is no exception for self-protection or home defense when it comes to a felon in possession of a firearm. Both state and federal law prohibit the possession of a firearm by a felon, unless that charge has been expunged or pardoned. (FL Stat § 790.23(1)(a), 18 U.S. Code § 922(g)(1))

As I stated earlier, since your charges are not eligible for expungement, your only option to carry a firearm would be by pursuing a pardon from the Governor, which is a long shot due to the convicted charges.

I understand your concern. Have you been convicted of any other crimes since your last felony 30 years ago?

No.

Are you currently on probation or parole for any of your previous felonies?

No.

Is there anything else the criminal lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured they’ll be able to help with owning a firearm.

Yes.

Hello, my name is Benjamin, and I have been a licensed attorney for over 19 years. I look forward to assisting you with your question.

What were these felonies? Were they state or federal charges? If state, what state?

State of Florida. One was child abuse [soaking my daughter with belt], the other is very shameful — lewd act on a minor.

I have daughters now myself, 12 years old and 16 years old.

I plead no contest for the lewd.

I understand, I only asked that because I wanted to understand if these charges have the possibility of expungement, which they do not.
