Is a US power of attorney effective abroad?
That is exactly right, but that is a Colombian law question about the validity of outside POAs in their country, so I can't address that directly as I am an expert in US law. But generally, you seem to understand the exact requirements necessary.

Durable Power of Attorney
Full Conversation
Hi! I have questions about Power of Attorney. My mom is bedridden and wishes to grant POA to myself and by brother. I’m a bit confused by the word Financial being included in the title. She is looking to designate us as her agents in everything as she is unable to physically go anywhere. We will need to get her ID card, US passport, and also work with the Colombian consulate to establish her dual US/Colombian citizenship. Is this the correct form for all of that? Should there be more?

I understand that navigating Power of Attorney can be quite complex, especially in your situation. Can you tell me if your mom has already discussed her wishes with you and your brother regarding the specific powers she wants to grant?
Yes, she has.

Have you or your brother previously handled any legal documents or processes for her, such as healthcare decisions or financial matters?
Yes

Is there anything else the Lawyer should know before I connect you? Rest assured they’ll be able to help with your Power of Attorney.
No, I just want to be sure we don’t have to redo this for lack of knowledge.

Hello, my name is Benjamin, and I have been a licensed attorney for over 19 years. I look forward to assisting you with your question. Is she a citizen of the US? Will this POA only be used in the US?
Hi, yes for the first question. For the second, I believe the answer to be yes as well because we would be dealing with the Colombian Consulate here in the states to process her Colombian citizenship.
Her mother (my grandmother) was born in Colombia, so my mom wishes to prove her Colombian citizenship by descent.

If you simply using this power of attorney in the United States, then you just need to have is signed and notarized, and it will be effective.
What would I need to do if I needed to use it in Colombia? Do I get it translated and/or apostilled? Something like that?

Okay wonderful. I understand completely about not being able to advise on Colombian law. I will reach out to the consulate and ask more questions to be sure I’m setting everything up correctly. Thanks for your assistance!
