[TN] [TN] What are my legal options for removing someone’s name from my mother’s gravestone?
The person listed on the deed of the burial plot typically has the right to make decisions about the gravestone. If your mother is indeed the owner, you may have a stronger position to request changes if you were the heir to her property. Her spouse though would also usually be considered an heir unless they disclaim their inheritance.

Hello. I am looking for information about changing my mother's gravestone.
I'm sorry to hear that you're dealing with this situation regarding your mother's gravestone. can you please tell me what specific changes you would like to make to the gravestone?
Currently, both her name and my former stepfather's name are engraved. However, I believe he has remarried. I am wondering what my legal options are for removing his name from the gravestone.
Have you already contacted the cemetery or monument company about this change?
No, I wanted the legal information first.
Is there anything else the lawyer should know before i connect you? rest assured they'll be able to help with removing a name from a gravestone.
Yes.
My stepfather has a very limited online presence and I can't find his current location. I have considered hiring a private investigator to find him.
Hi there! My name is Liz and I’ve been an attorney for more than a decade, and I am here to assist with your legal concerns. So I can best help, are two grave plots owned?
Hi, Liz. No, there is only one plot. Her ashes are buried there, and he claimed he wanted to have her ashes exhumed and co-mingled with his upon his death.
Thanks for sharing that. Do you know who is listed on the deed?
This is in White House, TN if that matters.
Thanks for letting me know the location. It does help! Do you know who is listed on the plot deed?
I think we lost connection.
I'm here. Do you know who is listed on the deed?
I don't know who is on the deed. It is very likely my mother herself. Robert (the man in question) did not have financial means for much of anything like that. He rarely even signed contracts.
Was there a probate?
No probate.

So if he remarried, would I have to seek his permission to remove his name?
You would unfortunately still need his permission even though he has remarried unless there was a will with some terms.
I hope I was able to help! If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.
