According to Washington State law (Engrossed House Bill 1217), rent increases are capped at 10% annually for the remainder of 2025. Landlords cannot raise rent during the first 12 months of a tenancy. After that, increases are limited to 7% plus the Consumer Price Index (CPI) or 10%, whichever is less. The cap is based on the Seattle area’s CPI data and will be updated for 2026 after the June 2025 data release.

A new owner purchased the home I have lived in for 14 years. My rent was raised by the previous landlord on July 1, 2025, to $1,100. The new landlord took ownership on July 23 and gave me a notice on July 29 that the rent will be raised from $1,100 to $2,000 starting on October 1. I need to know if it is legal to give me a 60-day notice and if that much of an increase is allowed.

We are on a month-to-month lease with the prior owner. The new owner gave us 60 days’ notice.
