If you’re an active duty service member thinking about changing your name, your first stop should be military legal assistance. These offices—often called JAG or SJA—are there to help service members with personal legal matters, including name changes.

1. Since you’re living in Mississippi and plan to file your petition there, you’ll need to follow Mississippi’s legal process. Mississippi Chancery Courts handle name changes.

2. You must sign the petition in front of a notary. Notaries are available at banks, UPS stores, or the Chancery Court.

3. You’ll also need a Mississippi Civil Cover Sheet (AOC/01) and supporting documents (photo ID, proof of address, birth certificate if available).

4. After filing with the Chancery Court Clerk (about $150), the court may schedule a hearing. Mississippi typically requires publication in a local newspaper unless waived.

5. Once approved, you’ll receive a Name Change Order. Get certified copies for updating your records.

6. After the court order, update:

  • Social Security (Form SS-5)
  • Iowa driver’s license or ID
  • Iowa birth certificate (if applicable)
  • DEERS (military)
  • Personnel office (DD Form 4187 or similar)
  • CAC card
  • Tricare
  • Passport
  • Banks, insurance, etc.

Your legal residence remains Iowa, but name changes follow Mississippi law since you are filing there.

I don’t understand the military legal system. I went on their website for my area specifically, but there’s nothing specifically for legally changing your name.

Jon

Correct — it is under the civil system in civil court. The military items mentioned are done after you have a civil court order from a judge granting your name change.
