What can I do if someone doxxed me on Discord?
If you know who the person is, there are several ways to respond:
1. Report them to Discord’s Trust & Safety department.
You’ve already done this, which is excellent. Discord can remove the content and potentially suspend or ban the user.
2. Retain a civil lawyer to send a cease and desist letter.
This letter tells the person their behavior is illegal and must stop immediately, and demands that all posts about you be removed.
While it’s not a court order, when it comes from an attorney on official letterhead, it often scares offenders into compliance because it signals you’re ready to take legal action.
3. Report it to the police.
Doxxing, cyber harassment, and cyberbullying are crimes in many jurisdictions. If you report this to law enforcement and ask for prosecution, the state can charge the individual. Once charged, they must stop their conduct and answer for it in criminal court.
4. Request a civil protective order.
You may also be able to get a protective order (restraining order) to prohibit them from contacting or posting about you.
5. Consider a civil lawsuit.
If the doxxing caused you financial or emotional harm, you may be able to sue for damages under harassment or invasion-of-privacy laws.
If you don’t know who the person is, it’s more complex, but still actionable:
Discord can still remove the content and ban the user.
Law enforcement has subpoena power. If you file a police report and they determine a crime occurred, they can subpoena Discord for the user’s account information and IP data. Once identified, you can pursue the steps above.
